English Log
1. A relatively clean opening lap. Tsunoda had a poor launch and lost two positions right off the start. Albon and Leclerc appear to have gone off at Turn 1.
2. While there were several side-by-side battles throughout the field, the narrow street circuit didn’t allow for overtakes.
4. Russell, running in P4, radioed the team to express concern over Hamilton’s pace in P3. For Verstappen in P2, Hamilton acting as a buffer was advantageous.
5. Top 10 order: Norris, Verstappen, Hamilton, Russell, Piastri, Hülkenberg, Alonso, Leclerc, Colapinto, Pérez.
11. Pérez was closing in on Colapinto for P9. Ricciardo, on softs, pitted very early.
12. Tsunoda’s team radio: “Perez and Colapinto are fighting. There could be something coming to us, let’s be on it.”
Tsunoda: “Too much information.”
13. Sainz in P12 began chasing down Tsunoda in P11.
Magnussen on the radio: “I’m sliding around like hell.”
Kawai: “He’s choosing his words carefully, probably after Verstappen got a warning for his language.”
14. Sainz pitted early, a bit of a gamble aiming for undercut with clean air ahead. Estimated undercut advantage: about 2 seconds.
16. Pérez on the radio: “He’s very good. Difficult to pass Colapinto.”
Kawai: “A rare compliment from a Latin American veteran.”
17. Albon retired, returning the car to the garage, suspected brake overheating.
19. Sainz passed Zhou to take P16. Entering traffic can easily cost a second per lap.
20. Hamilton passed Magnussen for P12.
21. Hamilton radioed: “I think I clipped the wall on the way into the pit lane. Check my left.”
22. Sainz overtook Stroll for P15.
24. Leclerc on the radio: “This is so frustrating. How many laps are we going to do like this?”
Team: “Keep calm.”
Kawai: “I bet those stuck behind you in Monaco felt the same. The pace was very slow back then.”
25. Top 10 order: Norris, Verstappen, Russell, Piastri, Hülkenberg, Alonso, Leclerc, Colapinto, Pérez, Tsunoda.
26. Hamilton appeared to pass Tsunoda, but had to give the position back due to a track limits infringement.
He also expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s early pit call.
28. Russell pitted.
Kawai: “Mercedes handles degradation well, so his pace might set a benchmark.”
29. Leclerc finally passed Hülkenberg at the end of the main straight for P4.
Pérez also pitted.
Moriwaki: “Piastri in P3 is showing good pace with clear air ahead.”
30. Verstappen pitted. Stationary time: 3.0 seconds.
31. Norris pitted and rejoined still in the lead.
Verstappen passed Leclerc at Turn 14 for P3.
32. Verstappen radioed: “I just don’t get it. Why did we let him undercut us by so far?! It’s just so stupid.”
Kawai: “It wasn’t an undercut—Leclerc hadn’t even pitted yet.”
33. Replay showed Norris going off at Turn 14 on Lap 29, barely avoiding the wall. Still leading.
Russell radio: “I need a bit of encouragement, mate.”
Team: “Affirm. Traction matrix, everything’s looking really good at the moment.”
34. Tsunoda pitted and switched to softs.
Kawai: “Only one on softs. A gamble, but 26 laps left—it might just work.”
37. Leclerc pitted. Stationary time: 2.2 seconds. Rejoined in P8 ahead of Hülkenberg.
39. Piastri pitted and rejoined in P5 behind Hamilton.
Kawai: “This is the first Singapore GP to go this far without a safety car.”
40. Piastri passed Hamilton for P4.
Kawai: “The pace difference was clear; Hamilton didn’t defend much.”
41. Leclerc passed Alonso for P7.
42. Tsunoda swapped places with Ricciardo for P12, making use of the softs in a team strategy move.
43. Leclerc got ahead of Sainz for P6.
Top 10: Norris, Verstappen, Russell, Piastri, Hamilton, Leclerc, Sainz, Alonso, Hülkenberg, Pérez.
44. The gap between Hamilton and Leclerc was 14 seconds, but Leclerc was lapping 1.5 seconds faster—catching up seemed likely. Hamilton responded with a personal best, but Leclerc set the overall fastest lap.
45. Piastri overtook Russell for P3.
47. Russell radioed: “It’s like a sauna in here, mate.”
49. Norris set the fastest lap.
Moriwaki: “He might want to avoid pushing too hard and taking unnecessary risks here.”
50. Radio to Norris: “Total focus now—and drink!” But Norris still didn’t hydrate.
Kawai: “Many drivers drink up to 1.5 liters, but not Norris.”
The gap between Hamilton and Leclerc shrank to 0.6 seconds. Hamilton passed at Turn 7 for P5.
News came in that Magnussen suffered a puncture from a Turn 5 wall tap.
53. Piastri couldn’t close the gap to Verstappen.
Kawai: “The hard tyre’s best window is really just three or four laps after fitting.”
55. Kawai: “Drivers must be craving an ice-cold drink by now. Maybe a piña colada.”
Moriwaki: “In this heat, even the ice would melt in no time.” (Comment about piña colada went unacknowledged by the announcer.)
57. The fight for P9 between Hülkenberg and Pérez heated up.
The gap between Leclerc and Russell shrank to 1.5 seconds.
58. Top 3 in Driver of the Day votes: Norris, Leclerc, Ricciardo.
Kawai: “Verstappen never seems to be popular.”
Moriwaki: “He’s won too much—that’s why.”
60. Magnussen returned the car to the garage and retired.
61. Fierce battle for P4 between Russell and Leclerc.
Ricciardo set the fastest lap, helping Verstappen by taking the point away from Norris.
62. Norris took the checkered flag, leading from pole to finish.
Russell showed great traction and held on to P4.
This marked the first Singapore GP in history with no safety car deployment.
