English Log
Lap 1
Russell made a perfect getaway to retain the lead. Piastri passed Leclerc off the line to move up to second, while Norris gained one position to fourth. Hadjar dropped back to fifth.
- Further back, Hulkenberg gained three positions. There was no major chaos.
- Verstappen set the fastest lap. The commentary noted, “Yesterday, the engine was pathetic. Without that, he should really have been further up the grid.”
Laps 2–3
- Hadjar passed Norris to retake fourth place.
- On Lap 3, Verstappen passed Norris on the straight to move up to fifth. The commentary noted, “His teammate is next.” Russell had already built a lead of more than one second.
Around Lap 4
- Hadjar passed Leclerc to move into third, and shortly afterward, Verstappen also got past Leclerc, leaving the Ferrari sandwiched between the two Red Bulls. The commentary analyzed the difference in energy deployment, noting that things might have been different if Leclerc had managed to escape through the “charging station” section.
- The commentators also explained McLaren and Ferrari’s deployment strategies: “You can tell what the opposition is doing from the GPS data. Each driver thinks about where to attack and uses their energy accordingly.”
Laps 8–9: ⚠️ Stroll Stops
- Stroll slowed down and stopped his Aston Martin at the exit of Turn 15. There was some radio traffic telling him to stop, and VSC and SC were briefly considered, but the track was quickly cleared and the race continued. Stroll retired on the spot.
- Russell reported, “There’s a weird yellow around Turn 15,” while Alonso also mentioned that there had been a yellow flag for about a second, as confirmed by the replay.
Laps 10–13
- Russell continued to pull away from the field in a one-sided display. Piastri and Verstappen remained within around one second of each other in the fight for second. The commentary noted, “Russell just needs to listen to the pace behind him and match it. He’s managing his tires.”
- Antonelli gradually worked his way through the field. He passed Ocon to move up to P13 and had climbed to P11 by Lap 13. The commentary described it as “another charge from the man who went from 19th on the grid to a stunning victory at Monza.”
- Norris reported over the radio, “The Medium is okay, I’m just simply slow. I’m just slow.” The commentary explained, “That’s the difference in deployment—the energy management.”
Laps 14–15
- The commentators explained the energy strategy approaching Turn 16: “You want the battery to be fully charged by Turn 16. Piastri was told over the radio to watch the traction at Turn 15 in front of the presidential palace. Verstappen didn’t have his battery charged there during qualifying.”
- Norris and Hamilton battled for sixth. Hamilton drew alongside, but Norris defended successfully with the blocking line. Hamilton asked, “How much quicker can I go?” The team replied that he could gain two or three tenths in clean air, to which Hamilton responded, “I’m happy to stay here. Otherwise I lose more time.”
- Antonelli moved into tenth and into the points.
- Hamilton locked up and lost almost a tenth of a second. The commentary noted that it was good that they avoided contact, unlike Piastri’s first lap the previous year.
Laps 15–16: 😄 Hamilton’s Radio Confusion
- Hamilton produced another classic example of his famously confused radio exchanges. While running alone, he wanted traffic ahead to use as a reference, but there was nobody there. He asked, “Who’s ahead?” The reply came: “Russell is 30 seconds ahead.” Hamilton responded, “That can’t be right!”
- He then asked Sainz, “What’s our position?” Sainz replied, “P6.” Hamilton said, “Okay, I’ll get a picture of the situation. I’ll watch the TV.”
- The commentary joked, “Bond wouldn’t put it like that. They’re not quite on the same wavelength.”
Lap 16
- Antonelli overtook Colapinto to move into ninth, gaining seven positions from his starting spot of 16th. Colapinto was losing pace during this phase.
- The commentary explained Baku’s unique overtaking-mode strategy: “You charge the battery fully at Turn 16 and then use it along the long straight. There aren’t many options for how to deploy it. You want slipstream and a low-drag car, and if that’s the case, Mercedes and Russell have the advantage.”
Laps 17–19
- Russell reported over the radio, “The gusts feel really strong this lap.” The commentary noted that his pace was exactly the same as in FP2, so there was no concern about his pace.
- Kawai commented, “There is a fair amount of degradation on the Softs. Nobody is setting green sectors.” Verstappen reported over the radio, “The tire deg is big.”
- McLaren revealed some of its strategic thinking. When Hadjar asked, “Can you tell me if Max is struggling?”, the response was, “He’s going through the bad phase of the tires right now.”
Laps 20–21: 🔧 Alonso Retires & Pit Stops Begin
- Alonso pitted and retired from the race. He became the second Aston Martin retirement after Stroll, prompting the commentary: “This is a disaster for them.”
- Stroll’s retirement was explained by his radio messages: an abnormal coolant-water pressure reading, apparently the same issue seen at the Spanish Grand Prix, had prompted the team to stop the car.
- McLaren told Norris, “Just so you know, I’ve got the pace, so I’d like to swap,” while also saying, “If there’s a Safety Car, I’m going on the Softs.” The commentary explained that “the SC/VSC window is already open. Whenever it comes, Norris can just dive into the pits.”
- Russell set a series of purple laps and extended his lead over Piastri to around 9.8 seconds.
Laps 23–26: 🧱 Russell Brushes the Wall
- Russell, while leading comfortably, made light contact with the wall in the Old Town/Castle section. He said over the radio, “Did I hit it? Check the tires. It feels okay, but I can’t say it’s completely okay. Keep an eye on the pressures.” The commentary noted, “We’re halfway through the race, so if there’s a problem, they can bring him in. The concern is damage to the suspension.”
- The replay showed just how close it was, with Russell passing the wall by only 9 cm. He continued to set purple times in Sector 1, suggesting there was no major effect.
- At the halfway point, Sainz was the only driver who had made a pit stop while the race was running.
Laps 27–29
- Bottas pitted. Further back, Bortoleto and Hulkenberg swapped positions, moving from 15th/16th. Bortoleto admitted over the radio, “I wasn’t paying enough attention.”
- The commentary analyzed Verstappen’s potential pit window: “If he pits now, he’ll come out behind Gasly and ahead of Antonelli. Norris and Gasly are doing 48s and 49s, while Max is seven-tenths faster. The moment he knows he can come out ahead of Norris, he’ll dive in. There’s a 3.2-second gap between Norris and Hamilton.”
- A Red Bull team-order battle developed. Hamilton, with Hadjar closing in on the Softs, said over the radio, “I’m quicker. You can say it. Can I go for it?” Immediately afterward, Hadjar was told to hold position. The commentary remarked, “You can’t remember the last time Max was passed by his teammate on track.”
- Verstappen reported, “I have a problem under braking into Turn 16.” He also reported debris off-line around Turns 8–11 in the Castle section, although his engineer Will Joseph said he could not see anything.
Lap 30
- Norris locked up into Turn 1, triggering a yellow flag. He flat-spotted the tires and caused significant damage. The commentary asked, “Does this open Max’s pit window?”
- Piastri also said over the radio that both the SC and VSC windows were open, indicating that he was ready to react if the opportunity arose.
Lap 31: 💥 Albon Crash → Full Safety Car & Mass Pit Stops
- Albon crashed heavily into the wall at Turns 5–6, bringing out the full Safety Car. The car became partially embedded in the TecPro barrier, but Albon was okay. The commentary asked, “Is this going to change the race?”
- Hulkenberg passed the scene and said over the radio, “That’s a red flag.” The commentary joked that perhaps the race director didn’t want to show a red flag because he had a flight to catch that night.
- Gasly, Antonelli, Norris, Ocon, Lindblad, Russell, Piastri, Verstappen, Leclerc and Hamilton all pitted in succession. Norris took around 3.5 seconds, but thanks to the Safety Car he largely maintained his position. The commentary noted that it “made up for the time he lost with that Turn 1 overshoot.”
- Russell’s 11-second lead was wiped out. However, the commentary added, “With the pace Mercedes has today, they probably won’t be too worried. If they have that pace, they should be okay.”
Laps 32–34
- The post-pit tire selection among the leading drivers was: Russell – new Softs / Piastri – new Mediums / Verstappen – new Softs / Hadjar, Leclerc and Hamilton – new Mediums / Gasly, Antonelli, Norris and Colapinto – new Softs. The commentary noted, “The Softs look pretty good today. Max’s chance will be right after the restart.”
- Antonelli moved up to eighth, gaining eight positions from his starting grid spot. He narrowly missed the opportunity to pit immediately before the full Safety Car, but now had the advantage of Softs against the three Medium runners ahead of him—Hadjar, Leclerc and Hamilton.
- Hadjar reported a suspected car problem: “There’s a massive vibration,” followed by, “The ride has become really bad.” The engineer said they would check it and explained that it was “not the tires or the brakes. It could be because of the slow mode” used under SC/VSC conditions. The commentators then discussed how different teams manage engine modes during Safety Car periods.
- Albon’s car was removed by a recovery vehicle and track-cleaning operations continued.
Lap 35: SC In
- The Safety Car came into the pits, with the race restart scheduled for Lap 36. Lapped Bottas was also released from the pit lane ahead of the restart.
Lap 36: 💥 Multi-Car Crash at Restart → Safety Car Again
- Following the end of the Safety Car period, the race restarted on Lap 36. Russell made a clean getaway. Verstappen immediately passed Piastri to move into second.
- Moments later, chaos erupted further back. Colapinto dived down the inside at Turn 1 and collided with Gasly and Norris. Norris was unable to get his car moving and retired in heartbreaking fashion. Gasly also stopped at Turn 2, retiring while leaking coolant, meaning both Alpine cars were out of the race.
- At the same Turn 1 incident, Lindblad and Lawson also made contact, although Lindblad was able to continue. The commentary summed it up: “It’s Baku from a driver’s perspective. This is what you get here.”
- Antonelli narrowly avoided the entire mess on the left-hand side. The commentary praised him: “How on earth did he avoid that?”
- Ocon managed to escape the chaos in eighth, while Bearman moved into ninth, putting both Haas cars into the points. All cars were instructed to pass through the pit lane while the wreckage was cleared.
Laps 37–38
- The Safety Car led the field. The commentary noted that for Antonelli, the two Soft runners ahead—Norris and Gasly—had now disappeared from the equation. Norris and McLaren had suffered an especially cruel blow.
- The Safety Car came in on Lap 38, with the race set to restart on Lap 39.
Lap 39: Second Restart
- Russell again defended the lead cleanly at the restart. The order was Russell, Verstappen, Piastri, Hadjar, Leclerc, Hamilton, and Antonelli in seventh on Softs. Ocon was eighth, Bearman ninth and Lindblad tenth.
Lap 40: Piastri Runs Wide → Antonelli Moves Up
- Piastri ran off the track while Verstappen was challenging him, still carrying the flat spot caused by his Lap 31 lock-up. At one point, Piastri asked his engineer, “The flat-spot metric is at 50%. Can we make it?” Behind him, Antonelli took advantage of the situation to move into sixth.
- Verstappen closed to within less than a second of Russell, while Russell responded with a purple Sector 2.
Laps 41–42: Antonelli Catches Hamilton
- Antonelli used the advantage of his Soft tires to close rapidly on Hamilton’s Mediums. Hamilton showed all his experience with a strong defensive drive, but Antonelli eventually moved ahead on the straight to take fifth.
- Hamilton reported, “Massive understeer, especially Turns 10 and 12.” The commentary explained the energy strategy at the exit of Turn 16, including the “push and hold” approach.
Laps 43–44: Verstappen Closes on Russell
- Verstappen closed to within one second of Russell in the overtaking zone, at one point getting as close as five-tenths. The commentary noted that Red Bull had not won since last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix—14 races without a victory.
- Russell responded by setting purple sectors in Sectors 1 and 2 and rebuilt the gap. The commentary said, “Russell has been quick in Sector 2 since yesterday. That’s a very thick wall to get through.”
- Antonelli was around 3.8 seconds behind Leclerc.
Lap 46
- An incident was noted against Verstappen for failing to follow the race director’s instructions. It appeared to concern the regulations at the restart, although no penalty was reported.
Laps 47–48
- Russell asked over the radio, “Check the right rear.” The team replied, “No reliability issue, there’s no problem.” Verstappen’s side also checked whether his right front may have brushed the wall at the entrance to Turn 16.
- Further back, the battle remained intense. Bearman passed Lindblad, keeping both Haas cars in the points. Hulkenberg and Sainz were chasing hard on Softs against the Haas cars’ Mediums, with Hulkenberg closing to within four-tenths of Bearman.
Laps 49–50
- Verstappen set a 1:44 lap and closed again, reducing the gap from eight-tenths to six-tenths. Further back, Lawson’s attack fell just short at around one second.
- Russell responded with a 1:44.916 fastest lap to shake Verstappen off. Baku produced another classic moment as well: a tree branch was lying near Turn 4 and Russell drove straight past it. The commentary joked, “He’s doing the branch!”
- At the end of the lap, the gap was back above one second. Bottas slowed at Turn 1, but the yellow flag was quickly cleared.
Lap 51 (Final Lap): 🏁 Russell Wins
Right at the end, Lindblad passed Ocon to gain another position, with Ocon’s loss of boost through the yellow-flag section appearing to cost him. Hulkenberg, Ocon, Bearman and Sainz completed the points-paying positions.
The final lap remained a battle separated by just a few tenths to under a second. However, a yellow flag appeared at Turn 15 after Bottas slowed again. Verstappen appears to have lifted only minimally through the yellow sector, but the loss of momentum here seems to have followed him through to the finish.
Russell took the chequered flag for a pole-to-win victory, leading every lap for a dominant lights-to-flag win. It was his eighth career victory, his third of the season, and his sixth pole-to-win—falling just short of a Grand Slam.
