English Log

🏁 2026 F1 Malaysian Grand Prix — Race Highlights

  • Verstappen took his first win of the season, the 72nd victory of his career. He did it from pole to win, securing consecutive Sepang victories for the first time since the 2017 Malaysian Grand Prix.
  • The wet start split the field across three tire choices: Intermediates, Mediums and Softs. The Intermediate runners dominated the start, with Verstappen dropping from pole to third, while both Ferrari drivers on Softs lost a significant number of positions.
  • Both Mercedes drivers made spectacular starts. Antonelli took the lead, while Russell rocketed from eighth on the grid to second.
  • The race featured two Safety Car periods plus a VSC. The first was triggered by Bottas (Cadillac) going off track, while the second came after Albon suffered a gearbox failure.
  • Russell retired from second place with a PU problem. Had the race finished with Russell scoring no points, Antonelli’s championship lead would have increased to 84 points.
  • Hamilton fought back brilliantly to finish on the podium in third. After dropping into the midfield on Softs at the start, he overtook Hadjar late in the race to claim the final podium spot.

Pre-Race — Rain & Safety Car-Led Formation

  • After rain at Sepang, the race began behind the Safety Car. The track was wet and the field was split on tire choice. Verstappen and Antonelli, who started third, were on Intermediates, while both McLarens (NOR/PIA) were on Mediums and both Ferraris (HAM/LEC) were on Softs.
  • Perez initially started on Softs but changed his mind, pitting during the formation procedure to switch to Intermediates.
  • Piastri and Bortoleto entered the pit lane immediately before the start and took pit-lane starts, reflecting the differing strategic calls between the teams.

Laps 1–2 — Standing Start

  • The race got underway with a standing start. Both Mercedes made excellent getaways, with ANT taking the lead and RUS charging from eighth on the grid all the way up to second. Pole-sitter VER dropped to third, with the commentators suggesting that he may not have had any boost available at the start.
  • The Ferrari drivers, starting on Softs, had a disastrous opening. HAM lost a significant number of positions, while LEC pitted as early as the opening lap.

Laps 2–4

  • LEC stopped to replace his front wing/nose. Replay footage revealed contact with Hulkenberg at Turn 9, and the incident was noted for investigation.
  • HAM was told over the radio to box and replied, “I think that’s a good idea.” SAI, meanwhile, took the position that it was a gamble but said he was happy to stay out if the team wanted him to. The lap-time difference between the Intermediates and slick tires was close to 15–18 seconds.

Laps 4–5 — Overtakes

  • VER passed RUS at Turn 4 to move into second, making up one position after losing out at the start. RUS dropped to third.
  • HAD passed LAW on the back straight to move into fourth.
  • The gap between ANT and VER came down to just one-tenth, but ANT defended the inside at Turn 1 to retain the lead. Hamashima explained that the safest overtaking opportunities were on the back straight or the main straight.
  • The commentary explained that the slick runners were struggling to increase their pace because they were suffering from abrasion and abnormal surface wear. The gap between the Intermediates and slicks gradually disappeared.

Laps 8–9 — First Safety Car

  • Bottas (BOT/Cadillac) went off track, bringing out the Safety Car. The commentary called it “the best possible scenario,” as the SC came out just as the lap-time difference between the Intermediates and dry tires had disappeared, prompting almost the entire field to pit.
  • Pit-stop strategy under the SC: VER — new Softs; ANT — Mediums; RUS — Mediums; HAD — used Softs; LAW — Hards; OCO — Softs; LIN — Hards; SAI/BOR — Softs; PIA — Hards; NOR — new Hards. The entire field was now on slicks.
  • There were also a couple of close calls in the pit lane. SAI and PIA narrowly avoided contact when PIA pitted, while at the pit exit STR and ALB refused to yield, with STR emerging ahead on the inside.

Lap 13 — Safety Car Restart

  • VER overtook ANT at the restart to take the lead. RUS then also passed ANT around the outside, dropping ANT all the way to third. The top three became VER–RUS–ANT.
  • The commentary praised Verstappen’s skill at the restart, explaining that he had chosen his line while taking the layout of the long corner into account.
  • Bortoleto received a 10-second time penalty for the contact with SAI that damaged his front wing. SAI insisted over the radio, “I left plenty of space,” while BOR complained that he had been squeezed across.

Laps 14–16

  • ANT passed RUS at Turn 4 to retake second. It was a direct battle between the two teammates fighting for the championship. From there, the gap between them remained around four to five tenths.

Laps 17–18

  • HUL overtook NOR to move into 11th, but NOR immediately fought back, refusing to give up the position easily.
  • HAM said over the radio, “I’m faster than him.” His engineer replied, “For now, just keep the tires in good condition.” Hamilton was clearly carrying more pace.

Laps 19–20

  • ANT made an extremely aggressive move through the final corner and hit a bollard with his front wing, knocking it away. Fortunately, there was no damage to the front wing or floor. The commentary explained that if the bollard had been positioned on the right-hand side, toward the pit lane, the rules would require the driver to pit. Other teams were also warned over the radio to be careful because the bollard was missing.
  • VER had built a lead of more than 7.5 seconds over the field. Rain clouds became a topic of discussion, but the team decided to keep extending at “target minus five.”

Laps 21–23 — Midfield Battle

  • PIA passed LIN to move into eighth, but LIN immediately regained the position on the home straight. After PIA defended through Turns 1 and 2, LEC passed LIN at Turn 4 to move into ninth, dropping LIN to tenth.
  • HAM passed PIA for eighth, then overtook LIN to move up to seventh. His outstanding race pace was carrying him rapidly back into the points.
  • ALB was noted for “irregular driving” and was placed under post-race investigation. OCO also ran onto the wet grass after the rain but managed to recover.

Laps 23–26 — Second Round of Pit Stops

  • LEC pitted for used Softs. LAW also made his stop.
  • HAD and HAM pitted almost simultaneously. Hamilton’s stop was 0.8 seconds quicker than Hadjar’s, giving him an advantage in the pits. The commentary noted that the official expected pit loss was 23.7 seconds, compared with an actual loss of around 27.5 seconds.
  • RUS pitted from Softs to Mediums. ANT and VER then pitted in quick succession, around 30 seconds apart, with ANT covering the car behind. VER switched to used Softs.

Laps 27–28

  • NOR pitted from Hards to Softs and rejoined the race in ninth, ahead of LIN.

Laps 29–35 — Hamilton vs. Hadjar for Fourth

  • HAM caught HAD and reduced the gap to less than one second. Hadjar had completed 18 laps on used Softs and was around two seconds off his best pace, while Hamilton was around 0.5–0.6 seconds per lap quicker.
  • PIA passed LAW to move into seventh.
  • ALO overtook OCO to move into 11th.
  • HUL made a double overtake on OCO and STR to move into the points. The commentators also recalled Hulkenberg’s victory while leading the German team during his A1GP days.
  • ALO and LIN engaged in a switchback battle: Alonso passed Lindblad, LIN immediately fought back, and ALO then covered the move through Turn 2 to retake the position. Alonso was able to make good use of his fresher tires.
  • STR also passed OCO.
  • HAM could not find a way past HAD. Over the radio, Hamilton said, “Come on, find me some power somehow.” Hadjar responded that he was already doing “full lift” to manage the tires.
  • HUL’s pit release was referred to the stewards as a possible unsafe release.

Around Lap 40 — Albon VSC → Full SC: The Race’s Biggest Turning Point

  • ALB stopped around Turn 3, reporting over the radio, “The gearbox has broken.” A yellow flag was followed by the deployment of the Virtual Safety Car (VSC).
  • A huge wave of pit stops followed. VER pitted from Softs to Softs. ANT briefly became the race leader before also pitting, while HAM came in as well. Ferrari double-stopped HAM and LEC, while Mercedes double-stopped ANT and RUS. All four of the leading drivers emerged without losing their positions.
  • McLaren did not pit during the VSC, but the moment the indication appeared that it was becoming a full Safety Car, PIA and NOR both dived into the pits. A few laps earlier, NOR had said over the radio, “The full Safety Car window is open, but…” The decision not to pit under the VSC ultimately backfired. The commentary criticized the decision, saying, “That’s a bad call, isn’t it, race director?” As it took time to remove Albon’s car, the VSC became a full Safety Car. PIA rejoined one position lower.
  • LAW and ALO also pitted. Alonso reported, “Hulkenberg has completely caught me.”

Under the Safety Car — Russell’s Shock Retirement

  • RUS, running second, stopped near the pit-lane exit just before Turn 1 and retired. His radio messages included, “The engine feels different. Too much engine braking,” followed by, “PU hot.” The team only replied, “Check PU.” Russell climbed out of the car and was forced into a bitter retirement. When he asked, “What happened?”, Bono replied, “We need to investigate, but it’s probably a PU issue.” Toto was also seen personally apologizing.
  • The top three became VER–ANT–HAD. With Russell scoring no points, Antonelli’s championship lead would increase from 66 to 84 points.
  • ANT had accumulated several track-limit violations and was told by the team to leave a little more margin.
  • NOR also ran off at Turn 1 while following the Safety Car. He reported over the radio, “The engine feels different.”

Restart — Around Four Laps to Go

  • VER, ANT and HAD led the field into the restart. The leaders made a relatively calm getaway.
  • PIA attacked LAW and jumped up to sixth in their battle for sixth and seventh.
  • HAM passed HAD around the outside on the home straight to move into third and into podium position. Hadjar reported, “I have no front,” as his tires cooled and he could no longer hold Hamilton off.
  • LEC then overtook HAD as well, dropping Hadjar another position. Meanwhile, NOR was also noted for “irregular driving.”

Final Lap — Chequered Flag

The win was also a landmark for Red Bull’s new Ford-based powertrain, marking its first pole and first victory since the switch to Ford power.

Verstappen took his first win of the season with a pole-to-win victory, the 72nd win of his career. Over the radio he celebrated: “Seventy two mate, amazing job guys, fantastic weekend.” His consecutive Sepang victories, nine years apart, were also noted as surpassing Nigel Mansell’s seven-year gap between consecutive wins at Kyalami. Verstappen also set the fastest lap on the final lap.

On the final lap, ALO successfully defended against NOR, with Alonso finishing eighth for his best result of the season. His team praised him over the radio: “Great job with the recovery and the strategy.”

RUS’s radio message was heard in the background: “P2 mate, the fastest car today… sorry for George, that’s a real kick in the guts.” When ANT was asked whether they had been the fastest car today, he replied, “No, we were the second fastest today.”
