2026 Singapore Grand Prix — Race Log

🏁 Race Highlights

  • Verstappen (VER) wins from pole. He claims his first Singapore Grand Prix victory at his tenth attempt, securing his 50th career Grand Prix win in his 250th GP start. Red Bull makes it back-to-back victories and completes a clean sweep of the Sprint weekend format.
  • The podium: VER, Leclerc (LEC), and Antonelli (ANT). ANT carefully manages his energy in the closing stages before moving up to third and securing a podium finish.
  • Ferrari’s strategic confusion takes center stage. Ferrari fails to pit Hamilton (HAM) during the VSC, allowing ANT to leapfrog him. Earlier, the decision to keep LEC ahead after the opening pit stops also costs HAM significant time.
  • Two VSC periods: The first follows a mechanical problem that leaves Bottas (BOT) stopped; the second is triggered when Stroll (STR) stops on track.
  • A series of technical problems: Piastri (PIA) suffers a right-front puncture and makes an unscheduled extra pit stop. ANT runs off track after a brake heat-soak issue, while Hulkenberg (HUL) experiences radio failure.
  • HAM’s tires reach their limit in the closing stages. He is successively passed by ANT, Norris (NOR), and PIA, dropping to fifth before PIA overtakes him again on the final lap.

Race Log — Lap by Lap

Start – Lap 1

1. VER defends his pole position into Turn 1, holding off LEC’s challenge. LEC and HAM run side by side, but LEC lifts early and backs out of the fight. The order remains VER, LEC, HAM, ANT, NOR, and PIA. Lindblad (LIN), starting ninth, loses several positions off the line and falls outside the points. Commentary notes that Sainz’s (SAI) attack was dangerous and nearly left the cars squeezed together in a sandwich.

Laps 2–7

2. ALO overtakes Hadjar (HAD), who started from the pit lane. Otherwise, the field largely maintains its starting order.

3. BEA overtakes his Haas teammate OCO to move into 11th. Commentary suggests that BEA has been the quicker Haas driver since the previous day and that the team would be wasting an opportunity if it did not let him through, leaving OCO to play a supporting role.

4. BEA passes SAI to move into 10th and enter the points. He is attacking aggressively from the early stages.

5. VER sets the fastest lap with a time of 1:37.197.

6–7. VER continues to lead, with LEC in second and HAM in third. The early laps are relatively stable, with few position changes beyond the midfield battles.

Around Lap 8 — ⚠️ First VSC

8. BOT suffers a technical problem and stops near the pit exit at the end of the home straight. A Virtual Safety Car (VSC) is deployed. The pit lane remains open, and the VSC period ends relatively quickly. RUS, who started from the back of the grid, has steadily recovered to 13th from 14th.

Laps 10–18 — Mid-Race Strategic Battles

10. RUS overtakes SAI to move into 12th. His next targets are the Haas pair, OCO and BEA. Over the radio, RUS asks, “Hey, why don’t I have deployment?” referring to the overtake mode. His engineer replies that he has lost overtake. RUS also reports a problem with his dashboard, saying he cannot see his delta or tire temperatures.

11. NOR says, “I want soft.” Commentary questions the strategy implications of fitting another set of Softs, potentially committing him to a two-stop race.

12. LEC discusses “Plan C” with Ferrari and the possibility of doing the opposite of Red Bull’s strategy by staying out to counter an undercut.

13. HUL complains about his tire condition. Commentary points out visible front-tire graining, with abrasion affecting the surface.

14–18. VER leads LEC at the front, while HAM, who started on Mediums, struggles to find pace. ANT, NOR, and PIA close in on him, setting up a three-way fight for third. Commentary also highlights the track-limits statistics: ANT has the most violations at this point, with around 19, followed by STR in second and SAI in third. ANT’s accumulating warnings become a potential factor later in the race.

Around Lap 19 — The Strategic Turning Point

19. HAM is the first of the leading drivers to pit, switching from Mediums to Softs. Commentary describes the original Medium-tire choice as a failure and a major miscalculation. After rejoining on Softs, HAM overtakes LAW to move into sixth. VER stays out because his pace remains strong and there is no need to pit immediately. Ferrari, meanwhile, extends LEC’s stint.

Laps 24–27 — Ferrari’s Strategic Confusion Becomes Apparent

24. PER pits, followed by ANT, who switches to Mediums. LEC also pits, choosing Mediums in an attempt to make a one-stop strategy work by extending his stint significantly.

25. LEC rejoins ahead of HAM, leaving LEC fourth and HAM fifth. Commentary criticizes Ferrari’s decision to put LEC, who is on the slower tire strategy, ahead of HAM, calling it “a Ferrari classic.”

26–27. HAM repeatedly voices his frustration over the radio, saying he has lost two seconds and that he is faster. Commentary argues that Ferrari should have established a clear driver-priority policy but has failed to do so.

Around Lap 28 — Red Bull Executes a Perfect Pit Stop

28. LAW pits, prompting McLaren to react immediately. NOR responds with a 2.7-second stop. VER pits on the following lap and retains the lead without losing time, rejoining 1.4 seconds ahead of PIA. PIA stops one lap later, but his stop takes 4.2 seconds after a problem at the right-front wheel. Commentary praises Red Bull’s pit-stop execution, noting that the team is particularly quick when leading and was also the fastest in the previous race at Sepang. BEA and HAD also record good stops of 3.6 and 3.1 seconds, respectively.

Around Lap 31 — COL Stops, but No VSC

31. COL stops on track with a technical problem. The car is left in gear, but he manages to restart the engine successfully. Neither a VSC nor a full Safety Car is required.

Laps 32–34 — Radio Failure and a Puncture

32. HUL suffers a radio failure, repeating a problem that first appeared during Friday’s FP1 session. He can communicate with the team only through the pit board.

33. PIA suffers a right-front puncture and makes an unscheduled second pit stop. The puncture costs him more than ten seconds compared with a cheap stop under normal conditions, although he retains his position relative to LAW.

34. The fight for eighth intensifies between HUL, GAS, and RUS.

Around the same time, ANT runs off the track. He reports, “I had no brakes and went straight on.” His engineer replies, “That looks like heat soak.” Commentary explains that heat has built up in the brake system, with the expectation that the pedal should recover once things cool down.

HAM also reports, “The car won’t stop.” A slow puncture is suspected, and his lap time falls to 2.3 seconds slower than LEC’s.

Around Laps 38–39 — ⚠️ Second VSC: The Decisive Moment

38. STR stops on track after reaching the end of his tire life, triggering the second VSC of the race. LEC, ANT, and RUS pit; ANT switches from Mediums to Softs, while RUS benefits from a virtually free stop under the VSC.

39. HAM is the notable exception: Ferrari leaves him out. The commentators question the decision, asking why Ferrari did not pit him when the Softs could have lasted another one or two laps. By staying out, HAM misses the opportunity to pit at the ideal moment and allows ANT to emerge ahead of him after the stops. HAM’s engineer explains, “We are on plan B… we are six laps short to do plan C.” Commentary concludes that Ferrari’s poor strategy has become one of the defining stories of the race.

Around Lap 46 — LEC Passes HAM

46. Ferrari tells LEC not to lose time, effectively instructing him not to fight HAM. LEC catches HAM, closes to within 0.4 seconds, and completes a clean overtake in one move. The order becomes LEC in second and HAM in third.

At this point, the top 10 are VER, LEC, HAM, NOR, ANT, PIA, LAW, HUL, RUS, and GAS.

VER briefly loses some of his advantage after picking up debris and running off track, with his lead shrinking from 15 seconds to seven. He subsequently extends the gap again, helped by the time gained during the VSC period. Meanwhile, VER’s radio becomes one-way: he can hear the team, but his own messages are not getting through, raising concerns about whether strategic calls are reaching him.

RUS overtakes GAS to move into ninth.

Laps 53–54 — HAM’s Tires Fall Apart

53. ANT overtakes HAM for fourth. HAM has been repeatedly reporting that his tires are running out, while ANT has gradually closed the gap and makes the pass stick. HAM runs off track at Turn 1 and is investigated, but no further action is taken.

54. NOR also passes HAM, dropping the Ferrari driver to sixth. Commentary says Ferrari should have accepted the consequences and pitted HAM when it had the chance. The order at the front settles as VER, LEC, ANT, NOR, HAM, and PIA. HAM is told to focus on maintaining his gap to PIA behind.

McLaren radio exchange:

NOR: “I can’t catch the guys ahead. Is there a way to help the guy behind?”

Engineer: “We’ll think about it.”

One option discussed is allowing PIA through to put pressure on HAM, but the commentators believe this is unnecessary because there is already a sufficient gap.

ANT’s accumulated track-limits warnings remain a concern, with speculation that he could receive a five-second penalty. Mercedes tells him to keep the gap to NOR within seven seconds. The commentators joke that he could end up winning both the Drivers’ Championship and the track-limits championship this year.

In the battle just outside the points, HAD attacks on Softs and overtakes GAS to move into 10th, securing the final point.

Final Lap — Lap 62

62. On the final lap, PIA overtakes HAM, who has reached the limit of his tires, to claim fifth. HAM finishes sixth.

VER takes the checkered flag to win from pole. LEC finishes second and ANT third. It is VER’s first Singapore Grand Prix victory at his tenth attempt, his 50th career Grand Prix win in his 250th GP start, and Red Bull’s second consecutive victory. He also completes a clean sweep of the Sprint weekend format.

Over the last two weeks, VER has scored 58 points — more than the 55 points he earned across the first seven rounds of the season.

Extra Notes — Memorable Commentary

Weather: Before the race, the forecast’s 5% chance of rain attracts attention as an oddly specific figure. No rain falls during the race.

With VER’s radio communication silent, one commentator jokes that he is “about 30 meters below the surface in the Strait of Malacca,” like a submarine.

On Ferrari’s contradictory radio messages, the commentary team jokes that it sounds like a comedy routine, calling it “a Ferrari classic.”

Moriwaki explains brake heat soak from a driver’s perspective: “Humans can suffer heat soak too. When the cooling suit stops working and you’re getting extremely hot, your body can no longer dissipate the heat.”
