English Log

★ Race Highlights

  • Antonelli (ANT, Mercedes) wins from pole. He executes a perfect one-stop strategy, switching from Mediums to Hards. It is his sixth win of the season; the transcript does not provide his career win total. His first victory in four races since the Spanish Grand Prix, Round 14, also marks his first pole-to-win since the Belgian Grand Prix.
  • A poor start costs Verstappen. Leclerc overtakes him into Turn 1. Antonelli, starting on Mediums against the Red Bull’s Softs, makes a much better getaway and wins the initial launch decisively.
  • Multiple first-lap collisions: Russell and Lawson collide at Turn 13, while Sainz and Lindblad also make contact. Bearman is involved in another incident. Russell receives a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage by leaving the track.
  • An early VSC: Debris believed to be an endplate from a front wing falls onto the track. Verstappen runs over it.
  • Two distinct strategic approaches emerge. Antonelli, Hadjar, and Russell pursue one-stop strategies, while Verstappen adopts a two-stop approach of Softs, Softs, then Mediums. Both Ferraris and the McLarens also make multiple stops. With temperatures falling, the race becomes more about tire wear than overheating.
  • Bearman receives a 10-second penalty for contact with Gasly and later retires after damaging his front wing. His radio messages reveal confusion about what is happening.
  • Hadjar suffers a technical issue. An engine-mapping problem leaves the first 40% of throttle input ineffective. He also complains over the radio that the team has sent him the wrong switch setting.
  • Leclerc charges through the field late in the race. On Lap 48, he overtakes Norris to move into podium contention, then passes Verstappen shortly afterward to take second.
  • A late VSC follows a stoppage by home-race driver Bottas. His car suffers an engine problem and cannot be moved because a gear remains engaged.
  • Hamilton finishes fourth after overtaking Hadjar and Norris late in the race. As a result, Antonelli’s potential title-clinching moment is postponed until at least the next round in Mexico City.
  • Ferrari recovers well after a difficult qualifying session, while Red Bull struggles with both strategy and car performance.

Race Log — Lap by Lap

Formation Lap / Before the Start

The race is scheduled for 56 laps. Antonelli starts from pole at his home race for Mercedes, with Verstappen second, Hadjar third, Leclerc fourth, Hamilton fifth, Russell sixth, Piastri seventh, Norris eighth, Lawson ninth, and Gasly tenth.

Several drivers start out of position following grid penalties. Lindblad, with a five-place penalty, starts 14th; Bortoleto starts 21st after a penalty; and Colapinto also drops to the back. Home-race driver Bottas starts 19th, while Pérez starts 18th for his 300th Grand Prix start. Stroll starts from the pit lane after a gearbox change.

Starting tires: Antonelli, Russell, both McLarens, and Stroll start on Mediums. Bottas and Colapinto use Hards, while the rest start on Softs, with Hamilton on a used set. Commentary highlights the contrast between Antonelli’s Mediums and the Softs on Verstappen’s car alongside him.

On the grid, a mechanic rushes toward the rear of Alonso’s car. Commentary says the situation appears to be under control but expresses concern.

The championship permutations are also discussed: if Antonelli wins, Hamilton finishes fifth or lower, and Russell finishes below a specified position, Antonelli could clinch the title in this race. The exact Russell threshold is missing from the transcript.

Lap 1

Antonelli makes a perfect start. Verstappen gets away poorly, allowing Leclerc to overtake him. Hadjar also loses positions off the line.

Verstappen briefly battles Leclerc in an attempt to regain the position, but yellow flags follow.

There are several collisions. Russell makes contact with Lawson at Turn 13. Russell later argues over the radio: “I was on the inside, he took the risk coming around the outside himself.”

Sainz and Lindblad also collide, but the incident is noted without further action. Bearman is involved in another collision and reports, “He’s just turning on me.” Bortoleto is also noted for gaining an advantage by leaving the track.

Hulkenberg loses four places at the start, while Alonso drops to 17th.

Norris radios, “I’m being held up here,” prompting McLaren to let him through. Norris moves ahead of teammate Piastri.

Laps 2–3

2. A VSC is deployed after a black piece of debris, believed to be an endplate from a front wing, is spotted on the track. It appears to have fallen from a car, and Verstappen runs over it as he passes. The VSC ends after a short period.

The order at the front is Antonelli, Verstappen, Leclerc, Hamilton, Hadjar, and Russell.

Bearman has gained three positions to run 10th, while Albon has also climbed three places.

Laps 4–6

4. Antonelli leads Verstappen by approximately 2.4–2.5 seconds. Verstappen repeatedly sets the fastest lap, but the gap does not come down significantly.

5. Several drivers begin reporting front-tire graining. Commentary recalls a similar phenomenon from the previous year and notes that the graining can sometimes disappear unexpectedly when a driver closes up to the car ahead.

6. Russell’s Turn 13 incident with Lawson is placed under investigation. The replay appears to show the two drivers making contact with each other. Commentary suggests this looks more like a collision between the cars than a straightforward case of gaining an advantage by leaving the track.

Alonso overtakes Sainz to move into 16th.

Around Lap 6 — Russell’s Penalty

Russell receives a five-second penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. Commentary reacts: “Ooh, that’s a big one.” The team informs Russell over the radio.

Laps 7–8

7. Alonso overtakes Albon to move to the front of the group he is fighting with. Commentary remarks that the move is very typical of Alonso.

8. Lawson leads the midfield battle, running ninth after starting from the same position and remaining within reach of the points.

Laps 10–12

10. The gap between Antonelli and Verstappen remains almost unchanged from the end of Lap 2. Despite Verstappen’s pace, he cannot significantly close the deficit.

Commentary offers an explanation of downforce: at speeds around 250 km/h, the aerodynamic load can amount to roughly 50 kg. A car such as Williams, which already runs relatively low downforce, can suffer significantly if it loses even more.

Okubo also explains tire degradation. As the rear tires wear, a car’s balance can shift from understeer to neutral handling and eventually to oversteer.

11–12. Antonelli continues to control the race at the front, while Verstappen remains close enough to keep the pressure on without substantially reducing the gap.

Lap 13 — Verstappen’s First Pit Stop

13. Verstappen makes his first pit stop, switching from Softs to another set of Softs. This effectively commits him to a two-stop strategy or potentially more, prioritizing pace and an aggressive approach.

Bearman also pits and switches to Hards. Hamilton comes in for Softs to Mediums. He had told the team, “The tires are fine, let’s stay out,” but the team calls him in anyway.

Leclerc pits for Mediums. Piastri, who has been reporting a brake problem, also stops and switches to Hards.

Norris is told to box as well, but loses time with a stop lasting more than four seconds. He rejoins behind Gasly on Hards.

Stroll pits from Softs. Bortoleto’s incident involving an alleged advantage gained by leaving the track is placed under investigation.

The contact between Bearman and Gasly is also investigated.

Lap 17

17. Verstappen overtakes Russell while pushing hard as part of his strategy.

Norris overtakes Gasly.

Leclerc passes Russell to move into fourth. Russell has yet to make his pit stop.

Bearman receives a 10-second penalty for his collision with Gasly. Commentary says the incident initially looked like a racing incident but that the stewards have taken a stricter view.

Around Lap 20

20. Russell pits after completing approximately 20 laps on Mediums. He serves his five-second penalty during the stop and switches to Hards. He rejoins behind Gasly, although his exact position is unclear in the transcript.

Verstappen catches Hadjar ahead of him. Meanwhile, Piastri overtakes Lawson.

Hamilton asks the team over the radio to increase his front-wing angle. The team replies that it will make the adjustment at his next stop.

Laps 22–23 — Antonelli’s One-Stop Strategy

22. Antonelli, who has been leading comfortably, makes his pit stop and switches from Mediums to Hards, committing to a one-stop strategy.

23. Antonelli rejoins ahead of Verstappen, Hadjar, Leclerc, and Hamilton, maintaining a strong position despite having stopped.

Lap 26 — Hadjar Stops; Bearman Retires

26. Hadjar finally pits, switching from Softs to Hards and completing his planned one-stop strategy. Lawson also makes a pit stop.

Bearman returns to the garage and retires with damage to the left-front wing near the endplate. This follows his 10-second penalty for the collision with Gasly. His radio messages show his frustration and confusion: “What are we looking at? Come on!”

Hadjar also sounds confused over the radio, questioning why the team is bringing him in for those tires. The engineer explains that the choice is based on the conditions and the preferred tire available relative to the other cars. Commentary wonders whether the team failed to explain the decision properly.

Lap 27

27. Alonso pits. He appears to have a radio or car-control issue and reports, “I’ve got a problem with the car, I can’t drive it.” The team sends him a torque-map setting.

The Turn 1 incident involving Colapinto and Lindblad is recorded as an incident, with no penalty.

At this stage, Hulkenberg, Alonso, Colapinto, and Bottas are the four drivers yet to pit, all attempting to extend their Soft-tire stints.

Laps 30–32 — Hadjar’s Throttle Problem

30. Hadjar’s car issue becomes clear: an engine-mapping problem means the first 40% of throttle input is ineffective. He complains, “You sent me the wrong switch, didn’t you?” He is running sixth at this point.

Verstappen radios, “Front update please,” requesting an adjustment to the front-wing flap.

31. Verstappen makes his second pit stop, switching from Softs to Mediums. The stop takes 3.9 seconds, and he rejoins ahead of Hadjar with 25 laps remaining.

32. Antonelli overtakes Leclerc to retake the race lead. Hamilton is running third.

Laps 33–38 — Russell and Piastri Fight

33–35. Russell and Piastri engage in a prolonged battle, running within approximately 0.1–0.5 seconds of each other. Russell attacks at Turn 12, at the end of the back straight, but Piastri defends successfully. Both are on Hards, although Russell’s tires are newer.

Hulkenberg overtakes Ocon to move into 12th, gradually recovering from his poor start.

36. Hamilton makes his second pit stop, switching from Mediums to Hards. Having now used Softs, Mediums, and Hards, he has completed a three-compound strategy. The team also adjusts his front wing by four clicks, and he rejoins ahead of Piastri.

Leclerc also pits for Hards. Both Ferraris are now following the same strategy.

Norris has climbed five positions and is running third.

Lindblad also pits, having already indicated that he will abandon the one-stop plan.

37–38. Antonelli continues to lead, with Leclerc and Verstappen among the main challengers. Russell remains unable to get past Piastri despite his repeated attempts.

Around Lap 42 — Hamilton Passes Hadjar

42. Hamilton dives down the inside of Hadjar at Turn 1 and overtakes him to take fifth. Commentary notes that the front-wing adjustment appears to be working.

Alonso has lost his front wing and is suffering from severe understeer. He tells the team that he may need to retire. He eventually makes a second stop to replace the front wing and rejoins in 17th. His out-lap takes 2:19.

Antonelli receives a track-limits warning for running wide at the exit of Turn 20. It is his second warning of the day. Commentary explains that a further warning would bring him closer to a time penalty, with four or more violations potentially resulting in one. This contrasts with his exemplary qualifying session, in which he recorded no track-limit violations.

Lap 48 — Leclerc’s Charge

48. Several positions change dramatically in a single lap. Verstappen finally catches Norris, but Leclerc attacks Norris at Turn 13, producing a puff of tire smoke as he makes the overtake and moves into the podium positions.

Norris, whose tires are at their limit, says over the radio that he has given it his best but that it is over.

The top three are now Antonelli, Verstappen, and Leclerc. Verstappen has finally secured some clean air.

Lap 49 — Leclerc Passes Verstappen

49. On the back straight, Leclerc overtakes Verstappen to move into second. Commentary recalls Leclerc’s attitude to the battle: “It was either get him or get beaten.”

Lap 50 — Hamilton Passes Norris

50. Hamilton overtakes Norris on the home straight to take fourth. Ferrari has recovered strongly, with both cars having started fourth and fifth.

Laps 51–53 — Bottas Stops; Late VSC

51. Bottas, driving for Cadillac at his home race, slows dramatically after Turn 10 and then stops. An engine problem is suspected. Yellow flags are shown before a VSC is deployed.

The VSC offers a chance to make a pit stop with a reduced time loss, but none of the leading drivers comes in.

52. Bottas’s car remains stuck with a gear engaged. It cannot be moved, even by pushing it manually. Commentary jokes that there could be a fine if the car is not moved.

53. The VSC ends, and racing resumes. Antonelli leads, with Leclerc second and Verstappen third.

Laps 54–56 — Final Lap

54. Antonelli maintains a substantial lead over Leclerc as the race enters its closing stages. Verstappen continues to push, but he cannot close the gap.

55. Antonelli remains firmly in control. Verstappen sets a purple first sector, improving on his own best, but it is not enough to challenge for the lead.

56. Antonelli takes the checkered flag to win from pole. Leclerc finishes second, Verstappen third, and Hamilton fourth.

Hamilton’s fourth-place finish means Antonelli does not clinch the championship in this race. The title decision is postponed until at least the Mexico City Grand Prix, leaving the championship mathematically alive by the narrowest of margins.

Notable Incidents Outside the Top 10

  • Bearman — Retired: Receives a 10-second penalty for contact with Gasly and later returns to the garage with front-wing damage.
  • Bottas — Stops on track: Suffers an engine problem at his home race, triggering the late VSC.
  • Alonso — Finishes 17th: Drops as low as 17th, replaces his damaged front wing, and continues to the finish.
  • Hulkenberg: Falls to 15th at the start but gradually recovers positions.

Weather and Track Conditions

Race day is the coolest day of the weekend, with a track temperature of 36.85°C. Commentary sums up the conditions as: “Today is about tire wear rather than heat.”

The commentators emphasize that strategy cannot be fixed in advance. As one explains, “A race is a living thing. When the air and track temperatures change, the strategy changes too. There is no strategy that is set in stone on Saturday.”

Key Team Radio Messages

  • Russell: “I was on the inside, he took the risk coming around the outside himself.” He reacts angrily when informed of his penalty.
  • Hamilton: “The tires are fine, let’s stay out.” The team rejects his request and calls him in. Later, he repeatedly asks for more front wing, leading to a four-click adjustment.
  • Hadjar: Questions the tire choice and complains, “You sent me the wrong switch, didn’t you?” His car also suffers an engine-mapping issue.
  • Verstappen: “Front update please,” requesting a front-wing adjustment. He also repeatedly raises concerns about engine braking.
  • Alonso: “I’ve got a problem with the car, I can’t drive it.” The team responds by sending a torque-map setting.
  • Norris: “I’m being held up here.” McLaren responds by letting him pass Piastri.

Memorable Commentary and Explanations

Overtaking opportunities: Turn 12, at the end of the back straight, is identified as a key passing point. A significant tire advantage can also make a move into Turn 13 possible.

Leclerc vs. Verstappen: “Leclerc is the only one who can do that to Max.”

The championship battle: The commentators describe the large points gap in recent years as rare and say following the championship feels as entertaining as riding a merry-go-round at COTA’s amusement area, CotaLand.

The youngest champion record: Commentary refers to Sebastian Vettel’s record, giving his age as 23 years and a number of days that is missing from the transcript. Antonelli is currently 20.

The right strategy: “You can’t tell what the correct strategy is until the end. The one thing we do know is that Antonelli is the only one who’s strong.”
