1. This circuit has seen only pole-sitters win in the last six races. But Verstappen gets an incredible launch and snatches the lead into Turn 1. Gasly, starting on softs, gains two positions.
3. Verstappen immediately pulls out of Norris’s DRS range. The gap is now 1.6 seconds.
4. Katayama: “Leclerc’s car is sliding quite a bit too — the track conditions still don’t seem ideal.”
5. Top 10: Verstappen, Norris, Russell, Piastri, Leclerc, Pérez, Gasly, Alonso, Sainz, Stroll.
6. Replay shows both Norris and Verstappen had identical reaction times of 0.28s. However, Norris’s car made an odd noise — possibly gear engagement issues.
9. Norris radio: “Who are we racing? Do you think it’s just Max?”
Engineer: “I think we’re racing whoever is ahead!”
Sainz overtakes Alonso for P8.
10. Verstappen is already managing tyres, backing off his pace by around 0.2 seconds per lap.
11. Sainz overtakes Gasly side-by-side from Turn 1 to Turn 3 to take P7.
Katayama: “Turn 1 favors the outside slightly, but Sainz did well to stick it through to Turn 3.”
13. Norris is closing back in on Verstappen, now within one second.
14. Verstappen radio: “The car doesn’t turn at all in Turn 10.”
16. Hamilton moves up to P9 by overtaking Alonso.
17. Verstappen radio: “My tyres are just numb, they don’t grip.”
Katayama: “Seeing Albon set the fastest lap on hards confirms Verstappen isn’t just managing — he’s suffering tyre degradation.”
18. Norris reclaims the lead from Verstappen on the main straight.
Kawai: “Hamilton in P9 is still within the pit stop window, so Verstappen couldn’t pit yet.”
20. Norris radio: “It felt like my brakes are going long, but I feel like there’s a lot more wind all of a sudden.”
Verstappen sets a personal best, but Norris escapes DRS range.
21. Engineer: “Brakes-wise, everything is fine on our side.”
Norris: “It’s OK, I think it’s wind.”
23. Norris increases the gap to Verstappen to 3 seconds — his race pace is strong.
24. Hamilton pits for hards — aiming to go to the end.
25. Leclerc pits, trying to undercut Piastri whom he couldn’t pass on track.
27. With clear air, Piastri extends his stint by five laps under Plan A — staying on a one-stop strategy.
28. Verstappen pits and rejoins ahead of Gasly in P6, avoiding traffic.
Russell loses 1 second with a slow right front but still manages fastest lap.
29. Norris pits and switches to hards, rejoining 5 seconds ahead of Verstappen.
30. Pérez’s stop takes 4.4 seconds.
31. Russell overtakes Gasly for P6 and is showing solid pace.
With Piastri yet to pit, the current top 10: Piastri, Norris, Verstappen, Leclerc, Russell, Gasly, Pérez, Sainz, Hamilton, Hülkenberg.
33. Piastri pits and rejoins in P5 ahead of Pérez.
34. Gasly’s release from the pits slightly overlaps with a crew member adjusting his right front. Unsafe release is noted, but Gasly seemed aware. He returns to track in P12.
37. Norris sets a fastest lap about 1 second quicker than Verstappen. Piastri is also lapping fast and closing in on Russell for P4. McLaren’s race pace is exceptional.
38. Stroll receives a 5-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane — he appeared to lock up under braking.
40. Piastri overtakes Russell around the outside of Turn 1 for P4.
Further back, Gasly, Albon, Alonso, Stroll, and Magnussen are bunched up like a first lap battle — all four overtake Magnussen.
Katayama: “With the banking and close racing, it feels like IndyCar.”
41. Piastri is now chasing down Leclerc for P3. Based on lap times, he should catch him in about 3 laps.
46. Sainz draws alongside Pérez at Turn 1 to challenge for P6. Pérez defends well.
47. Sainz delays his braking dramatically at Turn 1 to overtake Pérez and move into P6.
Piastri is informed via radio that even Verstappen 12 seconds ahead is a target — they’re confident a safety car would allow a position swap.
48. Piastri catches Leclerc, but Leclerc defends masterfully and fends him off for 2–3 laps.
49. Hamilton, in P8, makes a free pit stop with a 29-second gap behind and goes for the fastest lap.
51. Hamilton sets the fastest lap — 0.4s faster than leader Norris.
53. Pérez in P7 also has a chance for a free pit stop to target fastest lap, but the gap to Hamilton behind is only 23 seconds — risky if anything goes wrong. Red Bull is under pressure from McLaren in the Constructors’ standings.
55. Sainz is within DRS range of Russell in P5. Russell pits.
Kawai: “Pérez’s tyres are 25 laps old, so if Russell rejoins 19 seconds behind, he likely has enough pace to overtake again.”
58. Piastri is within 1 second of Leclerc. But overtaking a Ferrari running at Verstappen’s pace isn’t easy.
59. Russell, lapping 2 seconds quicker, closes in on Pérez for P6.
60. Top 10: Norris, Verstappen, Leclerc, Piastri, Sainz, Pérez, Russell, Hamilton, Hülkenberg, Gasly.
Gasly overtakes Hülkenberg around the outside of Turn 1 for P9.
61. Kawai: “Hülkenberg has won at this track in every category except F1. His hometown is just an hour away — Zandvoort is actually closer to him than anywhere in Germany.”
63. Hamilton further improves his own fastest lap.
64. Alonso passes Hülkenberg for P10. Norris seems aware of the fastest lap competition — though it seems out of reach, his pace suggests otherwise. Russell is closing on Pérez, but Hamilton is now catching Russell.
65. The gap between Pérez and Russell stabilizes at 9 seconds. Possibly an issue for Russell or tyre management kicking in?
70. Onboard footage from Norris shows the steep banking —
Katayama: “Even I get dizzy watching these onboards.”
71. Hamilton is also targeting fastest lap. Norris pushes on the final lap, going purple in Sector 2.
Katayama: “It’s like there’s a tailwind blowing only around Norris!”
72. Norris crosses the line with the fastest lap, beating Hamilton’s time by 0.06s. It wasn’t a necessary risk, but it shows just how dialed in the car was — a phenomenal final lap.
