1. Track temperature is 46°C. Leclerc gets a great start. Verstappen, who hasn’t lost a position at the start all season, jumps up to P5. Pérez, attacking right from Turn 1, gets past Sainz for P4. Norris jumps up to P12.
2. Kawai: “Norris is attacking before the degradation kicks in.”
Hamashima: “That’s the right way to go.”
3. Norris overtakes Tsunoda and Hülkenberg to move up to P11.
4. Leclerc sets the first fastest lap of the race.
5. Replay shows Tsunoda and Stroll made contact at the start. Stroll had already reported a puncture on Lap 1, but Tsunoda’s car also shows signs of damage. He has dropped down to P16.
6. Current top 10: Leclerc, Piastri, Pérez, Sainz, Verstappen, Russell, Alonso, Colapinto, Albon, Bearman.
7. Hamilton hits 100,000 career kilometers raced in F1 this weekend in Baku — another milestone for the seven-time world champion.
8. Norris overtakes Bearman for P10.
Kawai: “Everyone’s still setting personal bests, so we’re clearly seeing track evolution.”

Kawai: “That kind of thing is almost inevitable on a street circuit.”
10. Hülkenberg passes Bearman for P11. The gap between Leclerc and Piastri is now 3 seconds, while Pérez is closing in to within 1.4 seconds of Piastri.
11. Verstappen radio: “I have zero bite in the car.”
Kawai: “He means there’s no grip. Last race he used the word ‘numb.’”
Colapinto pits, switching from mediums to a fresh set of hards.
12. Alonso pits in response to Colapinto and rejoins 4 seconds ahead of him.
13. Russell and Verstappen also pit.
Kawai: “It’s like a domino effect of pit stops, triggered by Colapinto and Alonso.”
15. Russell finally overtakes Gasly after being stuck behind him, now running P9.
16. Norris had held up Pérez through the tricky second sector, allowing Piastri to rejoin ahead of Pérez after his stop. Tsunoda retires here — the damage from his earlier contact with Stroll was too severe, particularly around the sidepod.
17. Leclerc pits. Albon, still out on track, temporarily moves up to P3, which prevents Piastri from attacking Leclerc as he exits the pit lane.
18. Sainz pits.
19. Current top 10: Leclerc, Piastri, Pérez, Albon, Norris, Sainz, Verstappen, Russell, Alonso, Gasly.
20. Piastri overtakes Leclerc down the main straight at 340 km/h to take the lead.
Kawai: “Leclerc stayed out too long. He waited two laps after Piastri had pitted.”
22. The top three are now battling within DRS range.
Leclerc radio: “They are pushing like crazy, or they have more grip than us.”
23. Colapinto overtakes Gasly for P10. Battery charge levels are shown: Piastri at 0%, Leclerc at 20%.
Sainz overtakes Norris for P5.
26. Russell radio: “What lap do we expect Albon and Norris to box?”
Team: “We’re thinking at least another 10 laps.”
Hamashima: “He probably means he doesn’t want them to pit until he’s caught up to Verstappen.”
28. Leclerc keeps putting pressure on Piastri. The gap is down to 0.6 seconds.
31. Top 10: Piastri, Leclerc, Pérez, Sainz, Albon, Norris, Verstappen, Russell, Alonso, Colapinto.
32. Russell is just 0.5 seconds behind Verstappen in P7. With Albon pitting, Russell might see this as his chance.
33. Leclerc attempts a crossover move on Piastri — outside into Turn 1, inside into Turn 2. Piastri defends well. Pérez may be looking to capitalize if the two tangle.
34. Piastri’s red tail light starts blinking.
Kawai: “That means he’s out of electrical energy.”
Russell overtakes Verstappen down the main straight for P6.
35. Kawai: “Piastri’s front tyres look more worn than Leclerc’s. In English they call it ‘open’ when graining appears, but it’s a strange expression for Japanese speakers.”
36. Hülkenberg overtakes Colapinto for P9.
Leclerc’s team radio: “Box opposite McLaren.”
Kawai: “That might be a dummy message.”
37. Albon overtakes Colapinto for P10. Bearman is closing in on Colapinto as well.
38. Norris pits. His lap times were close to race leader level. The stop is also very quick.
Kawai: “It’s a shame he didn’t make it to Q3 in qualifying, but this performance could help Piastri too.”
39. Leclerc radio: “We are planning Plan C. What do you think?”
Leclerc: “Stupid!”
Norris, now on mediums, sets the fastest Sector 1. He’s just 1.4 seconds behind Verstappen in P6.
40. Norris team radio: “Imagine Andrea on your shoulder saying, ‘zero wheelspin every exit.’”
Hamashima: “Drivers naturally want to push on exits, but for a tyre engineer, that’s the number one thing to avoid.”
41. Kawai: “Last time it was ‘Here comes Brunello’—Andrea (the lead engineer) loves wine. Norris wants to get results for Andrea.”
Hamilton dives up the inside and overtakes Bearman for P12.
42. Top 10: Piastri, Leclerc, Pérez, Sainz, Russell, Verstappen, Norris, Alonso, Albon, Hülkenberg.
Piastri and Leclerc both kick the rear out through the final corner, leaving black marks behind.
Kawai: “If they overdo it, Pérez is the one who’ll be smiling.”
43. Sainz is now within 2.8 seconds of Pérez. Pérez can’t afford to just sit back anymore.
44. The gap between Sainz and Pérez shrinks to 1.9 seconds.
45. Norris keeps setting the fastest lap.
Leclerc team radio: “Come on!”
Leclerc: no response
Hamashima: “If it were Kimi Räikkönen, he’d probably say ‘Shut up.’”
47. The gap between Piastri and Leclerc opens to 1.4 seconds.
Kawai: “Maybe Leclerc is charging his battery.”
48. Leclerc radio: “No rear tyres!”
Pérez is closing in.
Norris is now just 0.8 seconds behind Verstappen and into DRS range.
49. Norris overtakes Verstappen on the main straight for P6.
Verstappen doesn’t defend.
Kawai: “With a 23-second gap to Alonso behind, Verstappen can take a free pit stop and go for the fastest lap to claw back a championship point.”
50. Pérez attacks Leclerc into the final corner, but Leclerc defends.
Sainz then dives in and passes Pérez — only for the two to collide shortly after.
Hamashima: “Verstappen pitted expecting a safety car, but now he can’t push with this situation.”
51. Replay shows Sainz was driving straight. Pérez seems to have veered into him, despite being on a straight section of track, causing tyre contact.
Virtual Safety Car is deployed.
Kawai: “In the end, Pérez ruined Verstappen’s fastest lap attempt.”
